I like both versions of Solaris too. Also, in the sci-fi-but-not-really-sci-fi category, Eternal Sunshine is a strong contender.
Then again, you've always had a much higher tolerance for boredom than I have (although I must admit, there are parts of both Solaris films that I like).
Several films fell into the not quite scifi category. For instance, it was determined by our impartial panel that John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a horror movie in scifi dressing rather than the reverse. If Eternal Sunshine had been deemed eligible it would have easily made one of the top 3 or 4 spots.
And a note on the "one director, one slot" rule, it was easy to pick Brazil over Twelve Monkeys (another strong contender) but harder to pick Close Encounters over E.T.
